Examples of Great Storytelling in Marketing

When you think about telling stories, what do you usually envision?  Do you picture the traditional bedtime stories with superheros, villains, and princesses?  Or do you picture something else?

Stories come in all shapes and sizes when it comes to using them as a marketing vehicle. To get your own creative juices flowing, we gathered a few famous examples from different companies.

Each one was used to illustrate a type of story discussed in our customizable course on How to Use the Power of Storytelling in Marketing.

Check them out, along with the tips accompanying each:

..

Chipotle – ‘The Scarecrow’

..

Cartoons offer an alternative to videos and photos. A creative video can be very entertaining and effective for your audience.

You can use animation software programs to make it even easier than producing video. Chipotle’s ‘The Scarecrow’ is a great example of this…

..

Coca Cola – ‘Building’

..

Coca-Cola’s “Building” video pans through the cross-section of a building to show all of the different people living in the building enjoying their daily lives and, of course, drinking Coke.

The families and couples range in diversity and age, with everything from young couples with a baby to elderly retirees.

..

Epuron – ‘Mr W.’

..

The story of Mr W. won energy Company Epuron numerous awards. They took the abstract concept of wind, created a misunderstood person, and then revealed the truth of who he was right at the end.

Not only did the story have a comedic element, but it was also an example of someone overcoming their own challenges and being ‘reborn’ – even though it wasn’t a real person!

..

Gatorade – ‘Replay’

..

A ‘rebirth story’ doesn’t even have to do with your company, but can focus just on your own customers. A great example is Gatorade’s Replay series.

The story isn’t about Gatorade at all. Instead, Gatorade sponsors the game and you only see their products very peripherally in the footage.

..

Honey Maid – ‘Wholesome’

..

Honey Maid’s “This Is Wholesome” documentary series includes one particular family called “Dad and Papa” about a same-sex couple.

Showing a same-sex family and saying “This Is Wholesome” obviously appeals to a younger, more educated and more progressive audience.

..

Red Bull – ‘Felix Baumgartner’

..

A well-structured story has a clear beginning, middle and end. The classic story is based around conflict and that conflict’s resolution. Even though an ad or story for marketing may be very short, it still includes these elements.

An example includes the Red Bull ad that features Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking free-fall from 128,000 feet.

..

Subaru – ‘They Lived’

..

Seeing this footage, the viewer naturally assumes that the passengers perished in the crash. But each image ends by saying, “They lived.”

The emotions and especially the suspense created by the video lead the viewer to form a psychological connection with Subaru.
